Building a Residential Curriculum:
A Workbook for Curriculum Planning and Implementation

by
Carol W. Hotchkiss and
Edward M. Kowalchick

Residential planning, whether beginning or enhancing a formal residential curriculum, is a pervasive and important reality for boarding schools today.  During contemporary times of significant change and disorder for today’s students, our schools need to determine, outside the traditional classroom setting, what values, life skills and covenants are necessary to provide the foundation for our boarding communities.

Planning for an effective and appropriate residential curriculum is an extensive and ongoing process.    Some schools may simply articulate the programs and structures they already have in place, while others use this planning to assess and redefine their residential mission, enhancing the services and co-curricular education they provide.  It is not necessarily how long and detailed a plan is, but rather that it fits the mission of the school and provides a strong foundation for program development and evaluation.

“Building a Residential Curriculum: A Workbook for Curriculum Planning and Implementation” provides excellent tools to assist you and your school in a productive planning and implementation process.  This workbook also provides a comprehensive plan for creating a strategic document for your residential school accreditation.

Most importantly, this text will guide your school through each step of the process.  While each school process will vary, this workbook can assist all types of boarding school communities in developing their own unique and comprehensive curriculum.
